Germany has praised Nigeria’s leadership in promoting peace and security across West Africa, describing the country as a key anchor of stability in the sub-region.
The German Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr Stefan Rossel, made the commendation on Wednesday, November 4, 2026, during a courtesy visit to the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Olufemi Oluyede, at the Defence Headquarters in Abuja.
Rossel reaffirmed Germany’s commitment to strengthening its longstanding relationship with Nigeria, describing the country as an important partner in advancing shared diplomatic, defence and security interests.
He expressed appreciation to the CDS for receiving him and his delegation, noting that sustained bilateral cooperation would create opportunities for mutually beneficial projects, particularly in the defence and security sectors.
During the meeting, the German Technical Advisory Group (G-TAG) briefed the Nigerian military leadership on the progress of its ongoing training support to the Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN).
The presentation highlighted programmes aimed at strengthening military professionalism, improving operational capacity and equipping Nigerian personnel with specialised skills to address evolving security challenges.
Responding, General Oluyede appreciated the German government for its continued partnership and support to the Nigerian Armed Forces.
He specifically acknowledged G-TAG’s contributions to the development of the Mechatronics School, Combat Tactical Care Training and Counter-Improvised Explosive Devices Training, alongside other capacity-building initiatives and material support.
The CDS emphasised the importance of sustaining and expanding existing defence cooperation, particularly in specialised military training and professional development.
He also called for more opportunities for Nigerian military personnel to participate in strategic and advanced courses, noting that such exposure would strengthen their professional competence and improve operational effectiveness.
Oluyede assured the German delegation of the Armed Forces’ readiness to deepen the existing partnership and explore additional areas of cooperation to tackle emerging security threats.
The visit highlights the continued defence relationship between Nigeria and Germany, with both countries seeking stronger military capacity, improved security cooperation and greater stability across the West African region.
