Abuja/Enugu.The Executive Vice Chairman of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Aminu Maida, has called for sustained vision and stakeholder collaboration as the Commission begins a comprehensive review of Nigeria’s National Telecommunications Policy 2000.

Speaking at the Enugu Tech Fest, Maida described the gathering as a reflection of the vibrancy and growing momentum within Nigeria’s technology ecosystem. He said the creativity and innovation displayed at the event underscore the country’s expanding digital potential.

He also commended Enugu State Governor, Peter Mbah, for convening a platform that promotes ideation, partnerships and technology-driven development.
From 500,000 Lines to 179 Million Connections
Maida highlighted the remarkable transformation of Nigeria’s telecommunications sector over the past 26 years.

According to him, Nigeria had fewer than 500,000 fixed telephone lines in 2000. Today, the country has over 179 million mobile connections.
He attributed this growth to policy clarity, regulatory stability, private sector investment and long-term planning.

The NCC boss noted that the expansion was the result of deliberate reforms and structured regulation that created room for competition and innovation.

A New Policy for a New Digital Era
With rapid advances in technology reshaping global economies, Maida announced that the Commission has commenced consultations to review the National Telecommunications Policy 2000 the framework that has guided the sector for over two decades.

He said the review aims to produce a forward-looking policy capable of addressing emerging technologies while sustaining innovation and investor confidence.

“The next National Telecommunications Policy must embrace and drive innovation while fostering a regulatory environment that is responsive to emerging technologies,” he stated.
The review process is expected to involve stakeholders across government and the private sector as Nigeria seeks to consolidate telecom gains and deepen its digital economy.
