Deji Adeyanju Urges New IGP Disu to Restore Discipline and Focus in Police Force

Civil rights activist Deji Adeyanju has congratulated Olatunji Rilwan Disu on his appointment as the new Inspector General of Police (IGP), calling on him to use the opportunity to restore professionalism and discipline within the Nigeria Police Force.

In a statement, Adeyanju emphasized that human rights must form the cornerstone of Disu’s leadership. He urged the IGP to reform internal practices, end extortion and unlawful arrests, and stop the misuse of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition and Prevention) Act to suppress dissenting voices.

Adeyanju also highlighted the need for full compliance with President Bola Tinubu’s directive on withdrawing police personnel from VIP protection duties. He stressed that police officers should return to their constitutional responsibility of maintaining public security, rather than being deployed for VIPs or involved in unofficial financial arrangements linked to such deployments.

The activist further called on the police to disengage from civil disputes such as land disagreements, tenancy conflicts, and domestic issues. According to Adeyanju, the force should focus squarely on combating armed robbery, kidnapping, terrorism, and organized criminal gangs.

He concluded that reclaiming their primary mandate of internal security is essential for the Nigeria Police Force to rebuild public trust and regain its status as a source of national pride.
