Nigeria, Austria Reaffirm Commitment to Strategic Partnership, Multilateralism, Sustainable Development
Nigeria and the Republic of Austria have reaffirmed their shared commitment to strengthening bilateral relations, deepening multilateral cooperation, and advancing mutually beneficial partnerships across key strategic sectors.

This commitment was reiterated during a high-level meeting between Nigeria’s Honourable Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Odumiegwu-Ojukwu, and the Secretary-General of the Federal Ministry of International and European Affairs of Austria, His Excellency Nikolaus Marschik, held on Thursday, 22 January 2026.

The meeting provided a vital diplomatic platform for both countries to review the state of Nigeria–Austria relations, exchange views on evolving global and regional developments, and identify practical avenues for expanding cooperation. Discussions took place against the backdrop of shifting geopolitical realities, economic realignments, and growing security concerns affecting Europe, Africa, and the wider international community, underscoring the importance of sustained dialogue and principled diplomacy.

Welcoming the Austrian delegation, Ambassador Odumiegwu-Ojukwu expressed Nigeria’s appreciation for Austria’s long-standing friendship and constructive engagement, noting that bilateral relations between both countries have remained cordial and stable for over five decades. She recalled Austria’s historic diplomatic presence in Nigeria and acknowledged the contributions of former Austrian envoys in strengthening institutional frameworks and people-to-people ties.

According to the Minister, shared cultural familiarity and mutual goodwill have further reinforced positive perceptions and enduring affinity between both nations.

Outlining Nigeria’s priorities, the Minister emphasised the country’s commitment to expanding economic cooperation with Austria, particularly in trade and investment. She identified renewable energy, green and environmental technologies, food security, agro-processing, infrastructure development, digital innovation, and information and communications technology as priority sectors where Austrian expertise and private-sector participation could support Nigeria’s development objectives.

She encouraged Austrian companies to explore investment opportunities within Nigeria’s Special Economic Zones and to leverage the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) as a gateway to wider regional markets. The Minister noted that Nigeria’s ongoing economic reforms and diversification efforts are aimed at attracting long-term, value-driven investments.

The discussions also underscored the importance of cultural, educational, and academic cooperation as enduring pillars of bilateral relations. Ambassador Odumiegwu-Ojukwu referenced existing memoranda of understanding on cultural exchange and highlighted the growing interest among Nigerian students and professionals in studying and training in Austria.

She expressed Nigeria’s readiness to expand scholarship opportunities, academic partnerships, and institutional collaboration between Nigerian and Austrian universities, research institutions, and cultural organisations, recognising education and cultural diplomacy as key drivers of sustainable partnership.

Security cooperation and regional stability featured prominently in the talks. The Minister briefed the Austrian delegation on Nigeria’s efforts to address terrorism, violent extremism, and organised crime, particularly within the Sahel and West African sub-region. She outlined Nigeria’s collaboration with international partners in combating Boko Haram and affiliated groups, rebuilding post-conflict communities, supporting internally displaced persons, and strengthening intelligence-sharing and capacity-building mechanisms.

She stressed that terrorism and insecurity are global challenges requiring collective action and sustained international cooperation.
Migration management was also discussed as a shared concern requiring balanced, humane, and forward-looking solutions.

The Minister emphasised Nigeria’s preference for orderly and regular migration pathways that protect human rights while addressing the root causes of irregular migration, including unemployment, skills gaps, and socio-economic pressures.

She highlighted Nigeria’s interest in skills development, vocational training, and capacity-building initiatives that empower young people locally while promoting structured mobility and knowledge exchange with partner countries.
In her concluding remarks, Ambassador Odumiegwu-Ojukwu reiterated Nigeria’s readiness to work closely with Austria to expand bilateral cooperation across identified priority areas, guided by mutual respect, shared values, and a results-oriented approach.

The Austrian delegation, in turn, reaffirmed Austria’s intention to engage Nigeria as a reliable and forward-looking partner and to integrate Nigerian perspectives into its evolving Africa strategy.

The engagement underscored a shared understanding that, amid global uncertainty and transformation, strong bilateral partnerships anchored in effective multilateral cooperation remain essential for peace, stability, and sustainable development. Building on decades of cordial relations, Nigeria and Austria signalled their resolve to deepen cooperation in ways that respond to contemporary realities while remaining rooted in enduring diplomatic principles.
