The Governing Board of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has held a strategic retreat in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, as part of efforts to strengthen regulatory oversight and align the Commission with Nigeria’s evolving digital economy priorities.
The retreat, presided over by the NCC Board Chairman, Chief Idris Olorunnimbe, provided a platform for Board members and Management to reflect on the Commission’s mandate and chart a responsive path amid rapid technological advancements in the telecommunications industry.
Discussions at the retreat focused on reinforcing the NCC’s role in driving national digital transformation while ensuring effective regulation of the telecoms sector. The Board also deliberated on governance, accountability, and strategic decision-making frameworks critical to sustaining industry growth and consumer protection.
Renowned facilitators led key sessions during the retreat. Mrs. Yetunde Akinloye conducted an in-depth review of the Nigerian Communications Act (2003), grounding the new Board members in the legal and regulatory foundations guiding the sector. Paul Usoro, emphasised the importance of global best practices in governance to enhance transparency, accountability, and sound regulatory leadership.
Providing international context, Professor Hyacinth Nwana examined global regulatory trends and the changing role of telecommunications regulators in an increasingly digital world. Professor Fabian Ajogwu, highlighted the centrality of strong corporate governance principles to institutional effectiveness and long-term performance.
The retreat featured robust engagements among Board members, with discussions centred on how the NCC can remain agile and responsive to technological innovation, intensifying market competition, and rising consumer expectations.
The NCC reaffirmed its commitment to proactive regulation that supports industry development while safeguarding public interest, as Nigeria continues its push towards a resilient and inclusive digital economy.
