The Federal Republic of Nigeria and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia have formalised a major defence partnership with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at strengthening military cooperation and enhancing regional security.

This was contained in a statement issued by Enderline Chukwu Assistant Director (Information & PR) For: Director, Information & PR Ministry of Defence

According to the agreement was signed by authorised representatives of both nations. Nigeria was represented by the Honourable Minister of State for Defence, H.E. Dr. Bello Mohammed Matawalle, MON, while the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia was represented by its Assistant Minister of Defence for Executive Affairs, Dr. Khaled H. Al-Biyari.

Describing the MoU as “a significant milestone,” Dr. Matawalle noted that the agreement had been under development for some time. “Its conclusion marks a major step toward strengthening Nigeria’s defence architecture and advancing the capability of our armed forces,” the Minister stated.

Under the terms of the MoU, the agreement will remain in force for an initial period of five years and may be reviewed or renewed for an additional term. Either country may also terminate the agreement with a minimum of three months’ written notice transmitted through diplomatic channels.

The MoU establishes a comprehensive framework for collaboration across critical defence and military areas, including professional training, joint exercises, technical support, intelligence sharing, logistics, and other mutually agreed programmes.

Nigeria is expected to benefit significantly from the partnership, particularly in the following areas:

Capacity Building and Training: Broader access to military education, specialist courses, and personnel exchanges to enhance the professionalism and technical expertise of Nigerian officers.

Operational Effectiveness: Joint drills and shared military doctrine that will enhance interoperability, improve readiness, and strengthen Nigeria’s overall defence posture.

Counter-Terrorism and Internal Security: Increased cooperation in counter-terrorism, counter-insurgency, and intelligence exchange to bolster national efforts against violent extremism, insurgency, and organised crime.

The Ministry of Defence described the MoU as a strategic tool that aligns with Nigeria’s long-term goals for security, stability, and defence modernisation.
