ZARIA, Nigeria – The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt.-Gen. Olufemi Oluyede, has reaffirmed the Nigerian Army’s commitment to making education a cornerstone in developing a professionally competent, adaptable, and future-ready force.
Speaking at the 67th Passing Out Parade of the Nigeria Military School (NMS) in Zaria on Saturday, Oluyede represented by Maj.-Gen. Mayirenso Saraso, General Officer Commanding 1 Division said the Army is strategically investing in both the academic and professional growth of its personnel.
“We are sponsoring soldiers to pursue further studies in reputable civilian universities and colleges across the country. Ex-NMS boys are among the most outstanding beneficiaries of this initiative,” he stated. “It reflects our commitment to producing a well-educated, highly skilled, and forward-thinking Nigerian Army.”
The COAS urged the new graduates to cherish the unique educational foundation offered by NMS and to maintain a lifelong commitment to learning, discipline, and service.
He further noted that the Army provides robust welfare and career advancement opportunities, including pathways for graduates to secure admission into the prestigious Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA). The rigorous military training and academic orientation at NMS, he said, give its alumni a distinct edge in meeting NDA’s admission requirements.
Highlighting his leadership philosophy anchored on readiness, operational effectiveness, sound administration, and stakeholder collaboration Oluyede reiterated the “Soldier First” principle, which prioritises the welfare and morale of personnel.
The event also drew dignitaries including Maj.-Gen. Abdul-Khalifa Ibrahim, Commandant of the NDA, as well as traditional and religious leaders, underscoring the importance of community and institutional support in grooming Nigeria’s next generation of military leaders.
