Abuja, Nigeria – July 25, 2025
The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Council, has announced the passing of renowned journalist and media professional, Dr. Leon Usigbe, who died on Friday, July 25, 2025, after a brief illness.
Dr. Usigbe was initially treated at the State House Clinic before being transferred to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) in Abuja, where he sadly passed away.
Originally from Uromi in Edo State, Dr. Usigbe had a distinguished journalism career spanning several decades. He worked with Vanguard Newspapers in Katsina, Kaduna, and Abuja, where he reported on the National Assembly and later served as Media Aide to former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu Masari.
He eventually rejoined Vanguard before moving to the Nigerian Tribune, where he rose to the position of Abuja Bureau Chief. His beat included coverage of the State House and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), making him one of the most respected voices in political reporting in the country.
In a statement signed by Comrade Jide Oyekunle, Secretary of NUJ FCT Council, the union described Dr. Usigbe as a committed and ethical journalist, whose work left an enduring legacy in the Nigerian media landscape.
“He was a journalist to be proud of one who upheld the ethics of the profession with dignity and courage,” the statement read.
“A tireless reporter, he was deeply committed to truth, accuracy, and giving voice to the voiceless.”
The NUJ noted that his death comes at a time when Nigeria’s media space requires credible voices to champion truth, democracy, and accountability.
“His passing leaves a significant void, not just in journalism, but in national discourse where principled reporting is urgently needed,” the council said.
The NUJ FCT Council extended its heartfelt condolences to Dr. Usigbe’s family, the management and staff of the Nigerian Tribune, his colleagues, friends, and everyone who was touched by his life and professional dedication.
