Makurdi, Benue State – In a significant political shift ahead of the 2027 elections, former Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice in Benue State, Barrister Alex Ter Adum, has officially resigned from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and pledged allegiance to the emerging National Coalition Movement.
Adum’s resignation was conveyed in a letter dated July 1, 2025, addressed to the Ward Chairman of the PDP in Mbabur Ward, Gwer East Local Government Area. In the letter titled “Notice of Resignation from the People’s Democratic Party,” the legal luminary cited the party’s refusal to join the new coalition as a key factor in his decision.
“I appreciate all the opportunities and privileges I have enjoyed as a member of the party since 1998 and I wish the party well,” Adum stated, while stressing his decision was taken to avoid any conflict with the current leadership of the PDP.
The National Coalition Movement, gaining momentum nationally, is seen as a major political force ahead of the next general election. The movement is reportedly backed by prominent political figures including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former Senate President David Mark, though neither has officially declared candidacy.
Adum’s defection is considered a major blow to the PDP in Benue, where he has long been regarded as a formidable grassroots mobilizer and influential political voice. His departure adds to growing concerns about internal divisions within the party and its preparedness for future political contests.
A respected figure in Benue’s political and public service space, Dr. Adum previously served as Group Managing Director of the Benue Investment and Property Company Limited and as Vice Chairman of the Benue State Judicial Service Commission. His alignment with the coalition is expected to reshape political calculations in the state and energize opposition structures.
Observers say his defection underscores a growing wave of realignments as political actors nationwide reposition ahead of the coalition’s formal launch and the 2027 general elections.
