Nigeria and Spain have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on political consultations to enhance bilateral relations and foster cooperation in areas of mutual interest.
The agreement was signed on Tuesday in Abuja during a working meeting between Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, and his Spanish counterpart, José Manuel Albares.
A statement issued after the meeting emphasized that the MoU establishes a framework for regular dialogue between both countries, advancing diplomatic, economic, and security cooperation.
Both ministers reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening collaboration in various sectors, including economic development, security, education, energy, and the fight against climate change.
“Nigeria is a strategic partner for Spain in West Africa, a region of priority within the Spain-Africa Strategy 2025-2028. Likewise, Spain remains a key ally for Nigeria within the European Union,” the statement noted.
Discussions also covered regional issues, particularly in the Sahel and West Africa, with both parties highlighting the role of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) in maintaining stability and development in the region.
On global affairs, they expressed concerns over the ongoing crises in Gaza and Ukraine, reiterating their commitment to peace, stability, and respect for international law.
The meeting was described as a significant step in deepening Spain-Nigeria relations, with both ministers pledging continued cooperation for the benefit of their nations and the broader Africa-Europe partnership
