The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) has called on Nigeria’s U-17 women’s national football team, the Flamingos, to complete their historic FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup campaign by defeating Japan in the final and bringing the trophy home.
The association described the team’s qualification for the final as a remarkable achievement that has brought pride to Nigeria and inspired young girls and women across the country.
In a congratulatory statement issued on November 6, 2026, NAWOJ National Chairperson, Hajia Aisha Ibrahim, praised the players for their determination, discipline, teamwork and resilience throughout the competition.
She said the Flamingos’ impressive performance had demonstrated the talent and competitive ability of Nigerian female athletes on the international stage.
Ibrahim also commended Head Coach Hakeem Busari and his technical crew for their leadership, tactical guidance and contribution to the team’s historic journey.
With Japan standing between Nigeria and the coveted trophy, the NAWOJ chairperson urged the young players to remain focused and approach the decisive encounter with confidence and determination.
“As you prepare to face Japan in the final, we want you to know that an entire nation is standing firmly behind you. You have made Nigeria proud, and we believe you have what it takes to go all the way.
“Play with confidence, courage, determination and the Nigerian spirit. Give the final your very best, make history and bring the trophy home. The world is watching, and Nigeria is cheering you on,” she said.
Beyond the football achievement, Ibrahim described the Flamingos’ success as evidence of what young Nigerian girls can accomplish when given opportunities to develop their talents and compete at the highest level.
She called for increased investment in grassroots sports development, particularly women’s football, urging parents, educational institutions and governments at all levels to support young female athletes.
NAWOJ also appealed to Nigerians, corporate organisations, sports enthusiasts and other stakeholders to rally behind the team through prayers, encouragement and necessary support ahead of the final.
The association expressed confidence that the Flamingos would rise to the occasion, overcome Japan and return home with the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup trophy.
NAWOJ concluded its message with a rallying call to the team: “Go, girls! Make history. Bring the Cup Home!”
