Human rights lawyer and activist, Deji Adeyanju, has welcomed the arrival of the United Nations Special Representative for West Africa and the Sahel, Leonardo Santos Simão, to Nigeria for a working visit scheduled for November 2 to 7, 2026.
Adeyanju described the visit as an important opportunity for engagement among stakeholders, expressing hope that discussions with the UN representative would strengthen efforts towards peace, stability and regional cooperation across West Africa and the Sahel.
In a statement, Adeyanju disclosed that he had looked forward to joining other critical stakeholders to engage with Simão during his visit.
However, he explained that he would be unable to participate in the planned engagements because he is currently outside the country attending an event.
The activist expressed appreciation for the invitation extended to him to be part of the stakeholder meeting, while wishing the UN representative a successful visit and productive discussions.
Simão serves as the Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for West Africa and the Sahel and Head of the United Nations Office for West Africa and the Sahel (UNOWAS).

His working visit to Nigeria is expected to provide an opportunity for engagements on issues affecting peace, security, stability and cooperation in the West African sub-region.
Adeyanju expressed optimism that the discussions during the visit would contribute to strengthening regional efforts to address shared challenges and promote lasting peace.
