Nigeria’s new High Commissioner to Canada, Emeritus Professor Isaac Folorunso Adewole, has formally commenced his diplomatic assignment in Ottawa after presenting his Letters of Credence to Canada’s Governor General on September 15, 2026.
Canada’s official protocol records list Adewole as Nigeria’s High Commissioner to Canada, with September 15 recorded as the date of his accreditation.
The presentation of credentials marks the formal beginning of his diplomatic engagement as Nigeria’s representative in Canada.
During the ceremony, Adewole conveyed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s greetings to Canada’s Governor General and expressed Nigeria’s readiness to strengthen the longstanding relationship between both countries.
He highlighted areas of shared interest and said Nigeria was prepared to expand mutually beneficial cooperation with Canada.
Adewole also highlighted Nigeria’s role in promoting democracy, good governance and counter-terrorism in Africa, including through regional and continental platforms such as the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the African Union (AU).
For her part, Canada’s Governor General described Letters of Credence as an instrument of trust between states and emphasised the importance of rules-based international cooperation.
She also highlighted the need for stronger conditions for peace, prosperity and improved quality of life amid challenges linked to conflicts, climate change and rapid technological development.
Adewole pledged to use his tenure to deepen Nigeria-Canada relations and promote cooperation in areas including peace, development, democratic governance and other shared interests.
The development follows Adewole’s earlier presentation of copies of his Letters of Credence to Canada’s Chief of Protocol in August, a formal step preceding the presentation to the Governor General.
