The Labour Party has applauded the Senate for passing the State Police Bill, describing the move as a major milestone in Nigeria’s efforts to reform its security architecture and tackle the country’s growing security challenges.
In a statement issued on Thursday by its National Publicity Secretary, Ken Eluma Asogwa, the party praised the National Assembly, particularly the Senate, for demonstrating courage, patriotism and urgency in advancing the constitutional amendment.
The party noted that Nigerians across the country’s six geopolitical zones have long demanded a policing system that is more responsive to local security realities, adding that decentralising law enforcement would improve intelligence gathering, crime prevention and community policing.
While acknowledging concerns that state police could be abused by some governors for political purposes, the Labour Party said the proposed constitutional amendment contains safeguards to minimise such risks.
It specifically referenced Section 17 of the amendment Bill, which it said provides accountability mechanisms and constitutional checks designed to prevent arbitrary control and ensure transparency in the operation of state police.
According to the party, no policing structure is entirely without flaws, but Nigeria’s current centrally controlled police system has struggled to effectively secure the country’s vast territory and diverse communities.
“The realities of today’s security environment demand innovative solutions capable of improving public safety and protecting lives and property,” the statement said.
With the Bill now awaiting approval by at least two-thirds of the 36 State Houses of Assembly before being transmitted to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for assent, the Labour Party called on governors and state lawmakers to place national security above partisan interests.
It urged state legislatures to support the constitutional amendment, arguing that an effective state policing system would enhance community security, improve law enforcement and strengthen Nigeria’s federal structure.
The party expressed confidence that, with proper oversight, transparency and strict adherence to constitutional provisions, state police would become an effective tool in combating crime and improving security across the federation.
