The National Orientation Agency (NOA) has urged Nigerians to deepen their commitment to democratic values, national unity, and responsible citizenship as the country commemorates Democracy Day.
In a statement marking the June 12 celebration, the Director-General of NOA, Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu, described the date as a significant symbol of the resilience, courage, and determination of Nigerians in their pursuit of democratic governance and the protection of fundamental rights and freedoms.
Issa-Onilu said democracy remains the most inclusive and accountable system of government, enabling citizens to freely elect their leaders, demand accountability from public office holders, and actively participate in nation-building.
According to him, Democracy Day is not only an opportunity to honour the sacrifices of individuals who fought for the restoration and sustenance of democratic rule in Nigeria, but also a moment to celebrate the enduring spirit of Nigerians who continue to uphold democratic ideals despite prevailing challenges.
“Democracy gives every citizen a voice and provides the best platform for peaceful national development, social justice, and economic growth,” he stated.
The NOA Director-General stressed that democracy extends beyond periodic elections, noting that it requires continuous civic engagement, respect for the rule of law, tolerance of differing opinions, and a commitment to the collective interest of the nation.
He called on Nigerians, especially young people, to reject misinformation, political violence, hate speech, and other actions capable of undermining democratic institutions and national cohesion.
Issa-Onilu reaffirmed NOA’s commitment to promoting civic responsibility, patriotism, and national consciousness through sustained voter education, public enlightenment campaigns, community engagement, and advocacy for responsible citizenship.
He also commended government institutions, civil society organisations, traditional rulers, religious leaders, the media, and development partners for their contributions to democratic governance and peaceful coexistence across the country.
The NOA boss urged citizens to use the occasion of Democracy Day to renew their faith in Nigeria’s democratic journey and work collectively towards building a more united, peaceful, and prosperous nation.
