Nigeria and China have renewed their commitment to strengthening cooperation in sports development, youth engagement and cultural exchange as both countries deepen efforts to enhance bilateral relations through sports diplomacy.
The renewed partnership was highlighted at the “Passion of Chinese Wushu: Cultural Heritage Chinese Wushu Premium Exhibition,” organised by the China Cultural Center in Nigeria in Abuja.
The event brought together government officials, sports administrators, diplomats and cultural stakeholders to celebrate Chinese martial arts and promote cultural understanding between both nations.
Representing the Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Mallam Shehu Dikko, Musa Amodu commended China for using sports and culture as tools for international cooperation, describing Wushu as a discipline that promotes values such as discipline, courage, self-control and excellence.
He noted that sports diplomacy provides Nigeria and China with a strong platform to deepen engagement beyond traditional diplomatic relations.
According to him, sports remain a universal language capable of bridging cultural and political differences while strengthening people-to-people connections.
Amodu observed that although Nigeria-China relations are often viewed through trade and infrastructure cooperation, cultural and sports exchanges remain essential pillars of the partnership.
He also disclosed that two officials of the National Sports Commission recently returned from a training programme in China organised by the Academy for International Business Officials, as part of ongoing capacity-building efforts.
He called for expanded cooperation in sports administration, coaching development, sports science, infrastructure management, anti-doping programmes and youth development.
Amodu further emphasized that Nigeria’s large youth population and China’s advanced sports systems create opportunities for collaboration in athlete development, sports technology and research.
He expressed the readiness of the National Sports Commission to strengthen engagement with Chinese institutions such as the China Cultural Center in Nigeria and Beijing Sport University.
Speaking at the event, Yang Jianxing, Cultural Counsellor at the Chinese Embassy and Director of the China Cultural Center in Nigeria, described Wushu as an important expression of China’s cultural heritage and values.

He explained that Wushu represents not only a sport but also a cultural philosophy that promotes peace, harmony and self-improvement.
Yang noted that the exhibition featured lectures, demonstrations and interactive sessions led by Wushu experts, offering Nigerians deeper exposure to Chinese martial arts.
He added that the programme coincided with the 55th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Nigeria and China and the China-Africa Year of People-to-People Exchanges.
According to him, cooperation between both countries has continued to expand across infrastructure, trade, education and cultural sectors, driven by strong people-to-people ties.
Also speaking, the Director of Programmes at the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN), Abiodun Ogidan, described the event as a strong example of cultural diplomacy and international friendship.
She said the exhibition promotes mutual understanding and strengthens relations between Nigeria and China beyond formal diplomacy.
Ogidan reaffirmed FRCN’s commitment to supporting cultural exchange initiatives through broadcasting partnerships that promote Chinese language, tourism, education and sports in Nigeria.
She added that continued collaboration would further deepen cultural ties and enhance mutual understanding between both nations.
