Sokoto, Nigeria — The 8 Division Nigerian Army has concluded its 2026 Inter-Brigade Corporals and Below Competition, showcasing troop combat readiness and professional military skills at the Giginya Military Cantonment.

The four-day exercise, held from April 13 to 16, 2026, ended with a closing ceremony at the Division Training School Obstacle Ground.

The competition featured a series of demanding military activities designed to test physical endurance, tactical competence, and combat preparedness. Events included drill exercises, map reading, combat swimming, skills-at-arms, and obstacle crossing.

Participating formations included 1 Brigade, 17 Brigade, 8 Division Garrison, 48 Engineer Brigade, and 58 Signal Brigade, all drawn from the Division’s Area of Responsibility.

In his remarks, the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 8 Division and Commander Sector 2 Joint Task Force (Operation FANSAN YAMMA), Major General Bemgba Paul Koughna, commended the troops for their dedication and discipline throughout the competition.

He emphasized that continuous training remains central to military professionalism, noting that soldiers must consistently prepare for operational readiness even in the absence of active combat.

The GOC urged personnel to take all aspects of training seriously, stressing that preparedness is key to overcoming emerging security challenges.

He also congratulated all participating formations, especially those that distinguished themselves, while encouraging units to improve performance ahead of future competitions.

At the end of the exercise, 8 Division Garrison emerged overall winner with 590 points, followed by 1 Brigade with 490 points, and 58 Signal Brigade in third place with 460 points.

The closing ceremony featured obstacle crossing demonstrations, presentation of medals and trophies to outstanding soldiers and formations, and group photographs to mark the event.
