Virtuous Woman Defined by Character, Not Beauty or Possessions — Joy Idam

Women have been urged to build their lives around godly character, wisdom, kindness and positive impact rather than beauty, age, marital status, social position or material possessions.

The charge was given by Princess Joy Omagha Idam while delivering a special Women’s Day sermon at Voice of Victory International Gospel Ministries, Suleja, Niger State.

Speaking on the theme, “The Mark of the Virtuous Woman,” and drawing from Proverbs 31:10–31, Idam said the true value of a woman was not determined by what she owned or how she looked, but by the quality of her character and the difference she made in the lives of others.

“A virtuous woman is valuable because of who she is, not just because of what she has,” she said.

Idam urged women to recognise their God-given worth and avoid allowing rejection, disappointment or the opinions of others to determine their identity or self-worth.

She also cautioned women against unhealthy competition, encouraging them instead to celebrate, support and uplift one another.

According to her, the success of another woman should not be seen as a threat, stressing that one woman’s achievement does not reduce another woman’s potential or accomplishments.

Character Over Beauty

Idam described character as one of the most important marks of a virtuous woman, noting that while beauty may attract attention, character ultimately earns respect.

She encouraged women to remain trustworthy, honest and dependable, stressing that a person’s true character is revealed by how they behave when nobody is watching.

The preacher also challenged women to become builders in their homes, families, workplaces and communities.

She said disappointment, heartbreak and difficult experiences should not prevent women from rebuilding their lives and continuing to make meaningful contributions to society.

“A woman can cry and still be strong. She can be wounded and still be a builder,” she said.

Use Your Words to Build Others

Idam further emphasised the importance of responsible communication, urging women to understand the power of their words.

Quoting Proverbs 31:26, she said a virtuous woman should speak with wisdom and kindness, using her voice to encourage, inspire, correct and uplift rather than tear others down.

She advised women to consider whether their words were true, necessary and kind before speaking.

Relationship With God Is the Greatest Mark

According to Idam, however, the greatest mark of a virtuous woman remains her relationship with God.

Referencing Proverbs 31:30, she noted that beauty and favour are temporary, while a woman who fears and honours God earns lasting praise.

She challenged the women to consider what they would ultimately be remembered for, asking whether it would be their beauty, clothing and position or their character, kindness, faith and positive impact.

Idam urged the women to become people who build, inspire and lift others while creating legacies that would benefit their families, communities and future generations.

“Let us become women who don’t just seek to be noticed, but women who make a difference,” she said.

The preacher expressed appreciation to the Lead Pastor of the ministry, Pastor Enetarea Paul, for the opportunity to minister at the Women’s Day celebration and for the warm reception extended to her and other guests.

She concluded by praying for God’s blessings upon the women and encouraging them to demonstrate faith, wisdom, kindness and service in their daily lives.
