PORT HARCOURT, August 12, 2026 — The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has doubled the transformation capacity of its Afam IV Transmission Substation in Rivers State from 120MVA to 240MVA following the commissioning of a new 150MVA, 330/132/33kV power transformer.

The new transformer was commissioned on Wednesday, August 12, 2026, by the TCN Port Harcourt Region as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s electricity transmission network.

According to TCN management, the additional transformer will significantly increase the substation’s capacity to transmit electricity to the Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company (PHEDC) load centre.

The expansion is expected to enable PHEDC to receive and distribute more electricity to consumers across Port Harcourt metropolis and surrounding communities.

TCN said the project is part of the ongoing TCN-World Bank power projects designed to improve the reliability and capacity of Nigeria’s electricity transmission infrastructure.

The company said the increased transformation capacity at Afam IV would help address transmission constraints and support improved electricity supply to homes, businesses and other electricity users within the affected areas.

The development represents another step in efforts to expand Nigeria’s power transmission capacity and improve the delivery of available electricity from the transmission grid to distribution companies and, ultimately, consumers.
