ABUJA – The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) and the Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST) have entered into a strategic partnership to integrate Nigeria’s National Identity Database with the country’s digital postcode system in a move aimed at improving public service delivery, digital governance and economic inclusion.

The partnership, unveiled during a joint press conference in Abuja on Friday, will create a unified framework linking the National Identification Number (NIN) with verified address data, enabling government agencies, businesses and service providers to identify and locate Nigerians more accurately.

Speaking at the event, NIMC Director-General and Chief Executive Officer, Engr. Abisoye Coker-Odusote, described the initiative as a major step in Nigeria’s digital transformation agenda.

She explained that the collaboration follows the enactment of the NIMC Act 2026, which expanded the commission’s mandate to oversee Nigeria’s Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) for identity and serve as the Root Certification Authority for the National Public Key Infrastructure (PKI).

According to her, the legal framework provides a secure foundation for digital identity, trusted authentication, electronic signatures, digital transactions and seamless access to government services.

Coker-Odusote noted that while the National Identification Number establishes a person’s identity, integrating it with the national postcode system will provide verified location data, making government planning and service delivery more efficient.

She said the integration will improve the targeting of government programmes, strengthen transparency, support evidence-based planning and expand access to healthcare, education, financial services, logistics, emergency response and e-commerce.

The NIMC boss disclosed that technical teams from both organisations have already commenced the integration of postcode retrieval into the NINAuth platform. Once completed, Nigerians will be able to verify their addresses and retrieve official postcodes through the same trusted identity platform.

She stressed that collaboration among government institutions has become essential to achieving the Federal Government’s digital transformation objectives.

“No single institution can build a resilient digital economy alone. Strategic partnerships are necessary to deliver secure, seamless and citizen-focused services,” she said.

Coker-Odusote also described NIPOST as a key partner because of its nationwide presence and expertise in addressing infrastructure, expressing confidence that the collaboration would produce practical benefits for citizens, businesses and government institutions.

She added that the initiative supports President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda by promoting digital innovation, economic inclusion and improved public service delivery.

Also speaking, the Postmaster General and Chief Executive Officer of NIPOST, Tola Odeyemi, described the partnership as a foundation for building a smarter, more connected Nigeria.
According to her, every modern economy depends on two critical capabilities—knowing who citizens are and knowing where they are located.

She explained that while identity enables access to services, a reliable postcode system supports efficient logistics, planning, emergency response and government interventions.

“The collaboration between NIMC and NIPOST is about creating infrastructure that promotes inclusion, trust, accessibility and economic participation for every Nigerian,” she said.

Odeyemi stated that integrating Nigeria’s identity and postcode systems would strengthen logistics, improve public service delivery, enhance emergency response and support more effective government planning.

She noted that the initiative aligns with NIPOST’s transformation into a modern infrastructure institution connecting citizens to government services, businesses and economic opportunities.

The Postmaster General assured Nigerians that the integration would be implemented with strict safeguards for privacy, data protection, accountability and institutional governance.

She added that the initiative is designed to ensure every Nigerian can be identified, located, reached and served more efficiently.

Both agencies expressed confidence that the collaboration would deepen interoperability across government institutions, strengthen Nigeria’s Digital Public Infrastructure and accelerate the country’s transition to a secure, efficient and inclusive digital economy.
