The Federal Government of Nigeria has congratulated the Government and people of Zimbabwe on the occasion of their Independence Day, marking 45 years of sovereignty since gaining independence in 1980.
In a statement issued by Kemiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, Spokesperson to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, stated that Nigeria described the milestone as a powerful symbol of resilience, courage, and the enduring quest for freedom by the Zimbabwean people.
The statement noted that Zimbabwe’s independence represents not only a national achievement but also a significant chapter in Africa’s broader struggle for liberation, dignity, and self-determination.
Nigeria commended Zimbabwe for its continued role in promoting African unity, regional stability, and multilateral cooperation, particularly within continental and global institutions.

Highlighting the long-standing relationship between both countries, the Federal Government said Nigeria and Zimbabwe share deep historical ties rooted in their common struggle against colonialism. It added that both nations have sustained cooperation through platforms such as the African Union and the United Nations, working together to advance peace, security, and inclusive development.
The government also emphasized the growing bilateral engagement between the two countries across key sectors, including trade, agriculture, education, and cultural exchange.
According to the statement, Nigeria remains committed to strengthening diplomatic ties with Zimbabwe through continued dialogue and mutually beneficial partnerships.
It further stressed the importance of enhancing people-to-people connections, noting that cultural affinity and shared identity remain vital in driving continental integration and prosperity.
Nigeria extended its best wishes to Zimbabwe for continued peace, progress, and national development.
