Nigeria’s Super Eagles began their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign with a 2-1 victory over Madagascar in Uyo on Friday.
George Ilenikhena was the hero for Nigeria, scoring twice to help the Super Eagles recover from an early setback and secure all three points in their opening Group L fixture.
Madagascar took the lead in the first half through Ehsan Kari, putting Nigeria under pressure early in the contest.
The Super Eagles responded just before the break, with Ilenikhena finding the back of the net in first-half stoppage time to restore parity.
Nigeria continued to push after the restart and eventually completed the comeback with Ilenikhena scoring his second goal of the night in the 65th minute.
The 2-1 victory gives Nigeria a winning start to their 2027 AFCON qualifying campaign.
The Super Eagles will now turn their attention to their next Group L fixture against Guinea-Bissau on September 29.
Nigeria are seeking a place at the 2027 AFCON finals, which will be co-hosted by Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda.
