The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists has secured land for the construction of its permanent National Secretariat, marking a major milestone in the association’s efforts to strengthen its institutional presence.

The development was announced during a courtesy visit by the NAWOJ National Executive, led by its National Chairperson, Aisha Ibrahim, to the National President of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Alhassan Yahaya.

According to the Chairperson, the association has successfully obtained the Certificate of Occupancy (C of O) for the land allocated in the Federal Capital Territory, following the completion of all required regulatory procedures.

She explained that the process involved strict compliance with documentation requirements, including formal authorisation, minutes and attendance records from the National Executive Council (NEC) meeting, as well as other statutory and identification documents. The NEC had formally approved the acquisition.

The NAWOJ leadership also navigated bureaucratic hurdles with the support of stakeholders, culminating in the successful issuance of the C of O at a total cost of ₦1,597,000.

Describing the achievement as strategic, the Chairperson noted that the project would enhance the association’s stability and improve the welfare of its members nationwide. She added that plans are already underway to begin development on the site, with the aim of delivering a functional secretariat within a short timeframe.

She further appreciated the support of the NUJ President, particularly his earlier intervention in helping the association retain its operational office during a critical period.

In his remarks, the NUJ President commended NAWOJ for what he described as a landmark achievement, noting that securing land and legal ownership documents represents a lasting legacy for the association.

He reaffirmed the union’s commitment to continued collaboration and urged NAWOJ to accelerate development on the site while leveraging strategic partnerships for sustainable growth.

The visit reinforced the longstanding relationship between NAWOJ and NUJ, highlighting their shared commitment to advancing the welfare and professional development of journalists across Nigeria.
