ABUJA — The Federal Government has announced plans to strengthen security operations in Kano State following the August 29, 2026 bandit attack in Chiroma Village, Garun Mallam Local Government Area.

The Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, disclosed the measures on Monday during a condolence visit and security assessment at the Kano State Government House, where he said President Bola Ahmed Tinubu had constituted a committee to develop a five-year defence and security plan.

According to Matawalle, the long-term plan is designed to provide a strategic framework for tackling insecurity and strengthening Nigeria’s security architecture.

He also announced plans to deploy additional fighting vehicles, weapons and other operational equipment to Kano State to enhance the capacity of security forces to protect communities and respond rapidly to attacks.

“We will do more to improve security in Nigeria,” Matawalle said, assuring Kano residents of the Federal Government’s commitment to confronting insecurity and restoring lasting peace.

The renewed security measures followed the August 29 attack on Chiroma Village, which triggered a military response involving troops of 3 Brigade, Kano, and personnel of the Joint Task Force.

Matawalle said the Commander of 3 Brigade, Brigadier General Jimoh, led a joint rescue operation involving troops from the Hawan-Kwano and Kwanar Dangora JTF camps.

The operation, according to the minister, resulted in the successful rescue of kidnapped victims around the Yan-Kifi Bridge and Marabar Kwari areas of Garun Mallam Local Government Area.

He commended the troops for their swift response and said the Federal Government would continue to provide the Armed Forces and other security agencies with the resources required to sustain offensive operations.

Matawalle said the government’s security strategy would place greater emphasis on proactive operations, strategic planning and stronger coordination among the federal, state and local governments.

The minister also held a closed-door security meeting with commanders of 3 Brigade and other military formations in Kano, where he urged them to sustain ongoing operations and intensify efforts to protect vulnerable communities.

“We will continue doing everything possible to support our security services to ensure our country is safe. I assure you that soon, insecurity will be a thing of the past, and we will all live in peace and prosperity,” he said.

Matawalle, however, stressed that military operations alone would not be sufficient to end insecurity.

He called on state and local governments, traditional institutions and residents to work closely with security agencies, particularly through the provision of timely and credible intelligence.

“It takes the combined effort of local government, state and federal levels to tackle this issue of insecurity,” he said.

For Kano State, the planned deployment of additional military vehicles, weapons and other operational equipment is expected to strengthen troops confronting banditry, kidnapping and other criminal threats.

Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, in his response, thanked the minister for visiting the state and pledged Kano’s continued cooperation with the Federal Government and security agencies.

Yusuf said the state government would intensify its own security efforts to complement federal operations, insisting that insecurity would not be allowed to take permanent root in Kano.

“We are confident in your leadership. At the state level, we will continue to do what needs to be done to ensure security and stability in Kano,” the governor said.

He added that Kano had taken note of President Tinubu’s commitment to strengthening national security and would continue working with the Federal Government to translate that commitment into greater protection for residents.

The latest measures place 3 Brigade, the two JTF camps and additional military equipment at the centre of the immediate response to security threats in Kano, while the proposed five-year defence and security plan is expected to provide a broader framework for Nigeria’s long-term response to insecurity.

The effectiveness of the renewed security push will ultimately depend on sustained operations, effective intelligence gathering and coordination among security agencies, governments and communities, particularly in areas vulnerable to banditry, kidnapping and other violent crimes.
