Political Parties Get Three-Day Lifeline as INEC Shifts Candidates’ Submission Deadline

ABUJA – The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has extended the deadline for the submission of candidates’ lists for the 2027 Presidential and National Assembly elections from July 11 to midnight on July 14, 2026.

The commission announced the extension in a statement issued on Sunday by the National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Mohammed Kudu Haruna.

According to INEC, the decision followed an appeal by the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) on behalf of political parties that were unable to upload the names and personal particulars of their candidates within the earlier deadline.

Haruna said the extension demonstrates the commission’s commitment to promoting inclusiveness while remaining within the provisions of the Electoral Act and the approved election timetable.

He urged all political parties yet to complete the nomination process to take advantage of the extension and ensure the successful upload of their candidates’ details before the new deadline expires at midnight on July 14, 2026.

The commission noted that the revised timetable and schedule of activities for the 2027 General Election had originally fixed July 11, 2026, as the deadline for the submission of candidates’ lists for the Presidential and National Assembly elections.
