FRSC Launches Operation Safe Kugbo” to Restrict Trucks, Ease Abuja Traffic Gridlock

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has launched a targeted enforcement operation, “Operation Safe Kugbo,” aimed at improving traffic flow and reducing road traffic crashes involving articulated vehicles along the busy Kugbo outbound corridor in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

The initiative follows recent interventions by the Corps Marshal, who constituted a high-level tactical team to assess and address the persistent crashes along the AYA–Nyanya Kugbo axis. The new operation represents a strategic step toward implementing the team’s recommendations.

“Operation Safe Kugbo” enforces restrictions on the movement of articulated vehicles and heavy-duty trucks during peak traffic hours, in line with Section 223 of the National Road Traffic Regulations (NRTR) and existing FCT traffic laws. The move also aligns with the FRSC’s 2026 Corporate Strategic Goal of creating safer road environments through preventive measures.

On the first day of enforcement, Wednesday, March 18, 2026, the Unit Commander of RS7.13 Nyanya, CRC WF Luka, led a joint team comprising personnel from RS7.1 FCT and RS7.13 Nyanya. The operation deployed eight officers, 22 marshals, three patrol vehicles, and five motorbikes.

A total of 89 articulated vehicles were successfully restricted from operating during designated peak periods, with authorities reporting full compliance from drivers and transport operators.

The FRSC commended stakeholders for their cooperation, noting that the smooth execution of the exercise reflects growing awareness and adherence to traffic regulations.

The Corps reaffirmed its commitment to data-driven and people-centered strategies to enhance road safety, urging operators of heavy-duty vehicles to sustain compliance as enforcement continues across the FCT.
