ASABA – The National President of the Guild of Online Media Editors and Publishers of Nigeria (GOMEP-NG), Comrade Akpovoke Otiti, has criticised the Delta State Government over the alleged exclusion of independent journalists from a recent media briefing hosted by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Mr. Kingsley Emu.
Otiti described the alleged action as a setback for press freedom and media inclusiveness, warning that restricting access to official government engagements could undermine transparency and public trust.
In a statement made available to journalists, the GOMEP-NG president alleged that coverage of the briefing was limited to the Government House Television crew, while the recorded reports were later distributed to government-affiliated media personnel for wider circulation.
He argued that all accredited journalists, regardless of their media platform or editorial stance, should be granted equal access to government activities.
According to Otiti, excluding independent media organisations from official engagements creates the impression that information is being controlled and limits opportunities for balanced and diverse reporting.
“The practice of limiting official engagements to selected government media crew while excluding independent journalists is unhealthy for democracy and the journalism profession. It creates the impression of an attempt to gag the media and control the flow of information,” he said.
He called on the Delta State Government to adopt a more inclusive media engagement policy that accommodates both traditional and digital news platforms.
Otiti stressed that constructive criticism from the media should be viewed as an essential component of democratic governance rather than a threat to government.
He also urged the Secretary to the State Government, Mr. Kingsley Emu, to ensure broader participation of journalists in future government briefings.
The GOMEP-NG president further highlighted the growing influence of online media, noting that digital platforms now play a leading role in breaking news and shaping public discourse.
According to him, government institutions should strengthen collaboration with credible online media organisations to improve public communication, transparency and accountability.
He added that fostering stronger relationships with journalists across all media platforms would enhance public understanding of government policies and reinforce democratic governance in Delta State.
