The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Olufemi Oluyede, has reaffirmed the commitment of the Defence Headquarters (DHQ) to improving veterans’ welfare through skills acquisition and economic empowerment initiatives.
Oluyede gave the assurance during the opening ceremony of the 2026 Skills Acquisition Training for Veterans in the South-West Geopolitical Zone, held at the Headquarters of the Nigerian Army’s 2 Division in Ibadan, Oyo State.
Organised by the DHQ Veteran Affairs Division, the programme is designed to equip veterans with practical skills to establish businesses, generate sustainable income and improve their families’ living conditions.
With the theme “Enhancing Veterans’ Capacity Building through Sustained Skill Acquisition Training for Enhanced National Development,” the initiative focuses on poultry farming, fish farming, snail farming, animal husbandry, livestock management and modern agricultural techniques.

The training is expected to provide participants with opportunities to develop productive ventures and become more economically independent after their years of service to the nation.
DHQ Highlights Support Initiatives for Veterans
The CDS also highlighted a partnership between the Defence Headquarters and Konga/Zinox aimed at providing serving military personnel and veterans with access to subsidised purchasing options to help cushion the effects of prevailing economic challenges.
He assured veterans that the military leadership would continue to introduce initiatives aimed at improving their welfare and overall quality of life.
Oluyede urged participants to make the most of the training by applying the knowledge and practical skills acquired to establish sustainable businesses and other productive ventures.
He stressed that these efforts would benefit veterans and their families while contributing to national development.
