A tragic incident in London has claimed the life of a 14-year-old Nigerian teenager, Eghosa Ogbebor, sparking outrage and concern among both local residents and Nigerians in the diaspora.

According to the Metropolitan Police, officers responded to reports of a shooting at about 3:40 p.m. on Thursday, April 2, 2026, on Lord Warwick Street in the Woolwich area of south-east London. Despite efforts by emergency responders, the teenager was pronounced dead at the scene.

While formal identification is still ongoing, authorities have named the victim as Eghosa Ogbebor. His family has been notified and is currently receiving support from specialist officers.

Police confirmed that three suspects two boys aged 14 and 16, and an 18-year-old man have been arrested on suspicion of murder and remain in custody as investigations continue.

Detective Chief Inspector Lucie Card, who is leading the investigation, described the incident as deeply disturbing, particularly due to the young age of the victim. She extended condolences to the family and appealed to the public for information that could assist the investigation.

Eyewitnesses reported scenes of panic near the Greyhound pub, with people running for safety after hearing a loud gunshot. Some reported seeing a teenager fleeing the area shortly after the incident.

Floral tributes have since been placed near the scene, as forensic teams continue their work. Authorities have also increased police presence in the area to reassure residents.

Reacting to the development, Sadiq Khan condemned the violence, stating that there is “absolutely no place” for such acts in the city, while confirming additional patrols in the affected community.

Investigations are ongoing.
