Over 35 Dead in Wase Mine Disaster: NOA Urges Stricter Safety Enforcement

The National Orientation Agency (NOA) has expressed deep sorrow over the death of more than 35 miners in a tragic accident at Kanpani Zurak in Wase Local Government Area, Plateau State. The agency has called for urgent enforcement of safety regulations and improved protective measures across mining sites nationwide.

This was contained in a statement signed by Paul Odenyi, Deputy Director, Communication and Media National Orientation Agency NOA.


The statement reads: Speaking on the incident, NOA Director General Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu described the tragedy as “completely unacceptable in a modern society,” stressing that strict compliance with safety rules is essential to protecting human lives and preserving national infrastructure.


Mallam Issa-Onilu highlighted the dangers of unauthorised mining operations and substandard safety practices, noting that such activities often lead to devastating consequences, including explosions and fires, as witnessed in Wase.


“We mourn the loss of our compatriots in the mining community and extend our deepest condolences to the grieving families. We stand in solidarity with them, Plateau State, and Nigeria as a whole,” he said.


The NOA chief further urged Nigerians to collectively oppose reckless mining practices that have repeatedly resulted in mass casualties and national trauma. He called on relevant authorities and stakeholders in the mining sector to strengthen compliance with safety standards, ensure regular inspections, and monitor mining sites closely to prevent future disasters.
