The Inspector-General of Police has formally declared the 15th Biennial Police Games (BIPOGA), tagged Asaba 2026, open in Delta State, describing sports as essential to operational readiness and institutional unity within the Nigeria Police Force.
Speaking at the opening ceremony in Asaba, the IGP said the Police Games represent more than a sporting tradition, noting that physical fitness, discipline and teamwork are directly connected to effective policing.
The event was attended by senior government officials, security leaders and athletes drawn from commands and formations across the country. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu was represented at the ceremony by the Minister of Defence, while Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori hosted the event.
According to the IGP, modern policing requires endurance, agility and resilience, qualities that competitive sports help to build. He added that a physically fit officer is better equipped to meet the demands of duty.
The police chief also highlighted the continuity of the Games, referencing the 14th edition held in Ibadan in 2024, which he said strengthened camaraderie and institutional pride across commands.
He urged participating officers to compete with passion and integrity, stressing that sportsmanship reflects the same values expected in professional policing courage, discipline and respect for rules.
Beyond competition, the IGP said the Biennial Police Games serve a broader national purpose by fostering unity across ranks and regions, while strengthening internal cohesion within the Force.
He expressed appreciation to the Delta State Government for hosting the event, describing Asaba as a capable centre for sporting and institutional gatherings.
The 15th edition of BIPOGA is expected to feature multiple sporting events, with officers competing for medals while promoting fitness, teamwork and esprit de corps within the Nigeria Police Force.
