Nigeria and the People’s Republic of China have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral relations following a courtesy visit by the Chargé d’Affaires of the Chinese Embassy, Mr. Zhou Hongyou, to the Spokesperson of Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, in Abuja.

During the meeting held on Tuesday, both sides reflected on the longstanding relationship between the two countries and the breadth of cooperation spanning trade, infrastructure development, and strategic partnerships. China described Nigeria as one of its most important partners in Africa, citing numerous Chinese-supported projects visible across key sectors of the Nigerian economy.

The discussions highlighted the value of reciprocal visits, study tours, and professional exchange programmes for diplomats as tools for strengthening mutual understanding. Emphasis was placed on short-term and specialised training in areas such as governance, public administration, strategic communication, and public diplomacy.

Reference was also made to training initiatives facilitated by Chinese academic institutions, notably Peking University, which are designed to promote knowledge-sharing and collaboration among developing nations.

The Chinese delegation further disclosed plans to mark the Chinese New Year alongside the anniversary of diplomatic relations between Nigeria and China. Both parties agreed on the need for coordinated media engagement and public communication on February 10, 2026, to commemorate the milestone and enhance public awareness of the partnership.

The meeting concluded with a renewed pledge by both countries to deepen diplomatic engagement, strengthen institutional cooperation, and expand people-to-people exchanges for mutual benefit.
