Comrade Hassan Taiwo Soweto, a human rights activist and convener of the #RevolutionNow movement, has been arraigned before Magistrate Court 2, Yaba, Lagos, following his arrest during a protest at the Lagos State House of Assembly against alleged illegal demolitions, forcible evictions, and land grabbing.

Soweto, who was reportedly picked up by police operatives on Monday during the peaceful demonstration, was brought to court on Tuesday under tight security. Visible swelling was observed on his face, with the activist alleging that he was brutally assaulted while in police custody.

Speaking briefly, Soweto maintained that he was subjected to physical abuse following his arrest and further alleged that some of his personal belongings were stolen by the police.
Leading human rights lawyer and Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Mr. Femi Falana, has arrived in court to represent Soweto. Falana’s presence has drawn the attention of activists, journalists, and civil society observers who are monitoring the proceedings closely.

As of the time of filing this report, the case had not yet been called, with Soweto remaining in the courtroom under police watch.

The protest that led to his arrest was organized by civil society groups and affected residents, who were demanding an end to what they described as arbitrary demolitions, forced evictions, and alleged land grabbing across parts of Lagos State.

A robust update is expected as proceedings commence.
