Nigeria and Thailand have agreed to strengthen their long-standing diplomatic and economic relations following a high-level bilateral meeting between Nigeria’s Honourable Minister of Foreign Affairs and Thailand’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, H.E. Mr. Sihasak Phuangketkeow, held on the margins of the relaunch of the Thailand–Africa Initiative (TAI) in Bangkok on 8 December 2025.

During the meeting, the Honourable Minister congratulated Mr. Phuangketkeow on his appointment and conveyed Nigeria’s condolences over recent national tragedies, including the passing of Her Majesty The Queen Mother and casualties from natural disasters. He reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to deepening cordial relations with Thailand and called for elevating the partnership to a strategic level spanning political, economic, defence, and cultural cooperation.

Both ministers reviewed past high-level engagements between the two countries and agreed on the need to sustain momentum through reciprocal visits. Nigeria welcomed Thailand’s renewed engagement with Africa under the TAI framework and proposed joint development projects aligned with Nigeria’s national priorities. The Minister also encouraged Thailand to promote closer collaboration between ASEAN and ECOWAS, with a long-term vision of an ASEAN–ECOWAS Summit.

Highlighting key economic complementarities, the Honourable Minister noted Nigeria’s significant crude oil exports to Thailand and Thailand’s strong presence in rice and machinery exports to Nigeria. He stressed the need for diversification into agro-processing, energy development, and value-added industries. Both sides discussed opportunities for cooperation in defence production, technology transfer, agriculture, ICT, manufacturing, and renewable energy, with Nigeria offering business incentives and access to its vast consumer market.

Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar commended Thailand’s educational support to Nigeria through scholarships and technical training and called for expansion of such opportunities. He also praised the ongoing Sustainable Agricultural Technology Development Project and proposed its scale-up while expanding joint research in sustainable and climate-resilient agriculture.

The ministers reaffirmed their shared membership in BRICS and committed to mutual support within its frameworks. They also discussed strengthening cooperation to combat transnational crimes including drug trafficking and human trafficking through intelligence sharing, joint training, and capacity building. Regional developments were reviewed, with Nigeria sharing perspectives on security in the Sahel, developments in Myanmar, and efforts to maintain stability along the Thailand Cambodia border.

Nigeria urged the swift conclusion of pending bilateral agreements covering trade, investment, agriculture, education, and cultural exchanges, noting that these would provide a foundation for establishing a Joint or Bi-National Commission. Strengthening consular cooperation was also emphasized, particularly the protection of Nigerian nationals, streamlined visa processes, and reciprocal facilitation for Thai citizens.

Nigeria further proposed enhanced collaboration with the Thailand International Cooperation Agency (TICA), including new pilot projects in rural development, SME empowerment, and capacity building.

The Honourable Minister reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to consolidating its partnership with Thailand and extended an invitation for future reciprocal visits. He underscored that Nigeria regards Thailand as a strategic partner in Asia and looks forward to a more robust, mutually beneficial relationship anchored on shared interests and sustainable development.
