‎The Federal Government of Nigeria has expressed profound shock and concern over the recent military coup that resulted in an unconstitutional change of government in the Republic of Guinea-Bissau.
‎
‎In a firm statement signed in Abuja,by
‎Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, Spokesperson,Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Abuja on Thursday, 27th November, 2025 states that the government condemned the military takeover, describing it as a grave assault on democratic governance, constitutional order, and regional stability. Nigeria noted that the development represents a clear violation of the ECOWAS Protocol on Democracy and Good Governance, which rejects any form of unlawful seizure of power.
‎
‎Nigeria reaffirmed its solidarity with the people of Guinea-Bissau and demanded the immediate and unconditional restoration of constitutional order, including the safety and release of all detained individuals and full respect for democratic institutions.
‎
‎The government further called on the authorities in Guinea-Bissau to guarantee the security of all accredited election observers remaining in the country on official duty.
‎
‎Nigeria urged all parties involved to exercise maximum restraint, engage in peaceful dialogue, and uphold the will of the citizens of Guinea-Bissau as expressed during the electoral process and the formal announcement of results by the electoral management body.
‎
‎The statement warned that those responsible for the coup will be held accountable, as their actions risk plunging the nation into instability and reversing years of democratic progress.
‎
‎As a key member of ECOWAS and the African Union, Nigeria pledged to work with regional and international partners to ensure a swift return to normalcy and democratic governance in Guinea-Bissau. The government reiterated its unwavering commitment to promoting peace, democracy, and stability across the African continent.
