Nigeria and Mexico have taken a significant step toward strengthening their long-standing diplomatic relations with the successful hosting of the First Bilateral Consultation Mechanism between both countries in Abuja.
The high-level meeting was co-chaired by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Nigeria, Ambassador Dunoma Umar Ahmed, and Ambassador Anibal Gomez Toledo, Director-General for Africa, Central Asia and the Middle East in Mexico’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Abuja, the maiden consultation provided an opportunity for both nations to deepen political cooperation, expand economic ties, and outline new frameworks for strategic partnership across multiple sectors.

Strengthening Political Dialogue & 50th Anniversary Commemoration

During the session, Nigeria and Mexico reviewed the state of their political relations and explored new platforms for high-level visits, bilateral meetings, and sustained dialogue mechanisms.
Both sides also discussed activities to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1976, marking half a century of friendship, cooperation, and shared global perspectives.

Officials from both countries emphasized the importance of maintaining regular consultations to reinforce mutual understanding and support on global and regional issues.

Boosting Trade, Investment & Business Cooperation

A major highlight of the meeting was the renewed commitment to deepen economic and trade relations.
The two countries assessed previous business missions and exchanges while identifying new areas for commercial collaboration.

They also reaffirmed support for the Nigeria–Mexico Chamber of Commerce and Industry, recognizing it as an important platform for expanding business linkages, promoting trade, and facilitating investment partnerships in areas such as:

Agriculture and agro-processing

Manufacturing

Technology and innovation

Oil and gas

Creative industries

Small and medium-scale enterprise development

Both sides agreed to explore untapped opportunities that can boost trade volume and support private-sector-driven growth.

Legal and Institutional Cooperation

Nigeria and Mexico also reviewed progress on several legal instruments and cooperation agreements currently under negotiation. Discussions focused on:

Advancing outstanding bilateral agreements

Identifying new areas for legal cooperation

Strengthening institutional frameworks for future collaboration

Officials emphasized the need for faster negotiation processes to ensure that the legal frameworks guiding the partnership reflect evolving global realities.

Collaboration in Multilateral Spaces

On multilateral engagements, Nigeria and Mexico exchanged views on pending candidacies of both countries in international organizations and global platforms.
They also discussed their shared involvement in the G-20 Summit, including opportunities for joint advocacy on global reforms.

Reform of the United Nations, climate action, migration issues, and global peace and security were also highlighted as areas of common interest where both nations could deepen cooperation.

Regional Affairs: Focus on ECOWAS

Ambassador Ahmed briefed the Mexican delegation on developments within the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), including political transitions, regional security, and economic integration efforts.
Both sides agreed on the need for continued collaboration in supporting regional stability, peace, and democratic governance.

A New Phase of Strategic Partnership

The meeting concluded with a shared commitment to institutionalize the consultation mechanism as a permanent platform for strengthening Nigeria–Mexico relations.

Both countries expressed optimism that the outcomes of the inaugural session would pave the way for:

Increased diplomatic engagement

Stronger economic cooperation

Enhanced cultural exchanges

Broader collaboration in multilateral diplomacy

The next session of the Nigeria–Mexico Consultation Mechanism is expected to be held in Mexico, further reinforcing the growing partnership between the two nations.
