The Federal Government of Nigeria has extended heartfelt condolences to the governments and people of Cuba, Haiti, and Jamaica following the widespread devastation and tragic loss of lives caused by Hurricane Melissa, which ravaged parts of the Caribbean this week.

In a statement released on Sunday by Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Nigeria described the disaster as “heart-wrenching,” noting that the images and reports emerging from the affected nations reflect the massive scale of destruction and human suffering.

“The Government and people of the Federal Republic of Nigeria have received with profound sorrow and deep sympathy the news of the catastrophic impact of Hurricane Melissa on our sister nations, the Republic of Cuba, Haiti, and Jamaica,” the statement read.

The Federal Government reaffirmed Nigeria’s solidarity with the affected nations during this period of immense adversity and commended the courage and commitment of their national emergency teams for working tirelessly to provide relief and save lives amid difficult conditions.

“We commend the swift and courageous efforts of the national emergency response teams in these countries who continue to work under extremely challenging conditions to bring relief and hope to victims,” the ministry added.

The statement also reiterated Nigeria’s strong commitment to South-South cooperation, emphasizing the enduring bonds of friendship, partnership, and shared humanity that connect Nigeria with the Caribbean nations.

“In the spirit of South-South cooperation and the enduring bonds of friendship that Nigeria shares with the nations of the Caribbean, the Federal Government extends its heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims and wishes a full and speedy recovery to the injured,” it stated.

Nigeria also called on the international community, donor agencies, and partner organizations to rally support for Cuba, Haiti, and Jamaica to aid swift recovery and reconstruction efforts in the wake of the devastating hurricane.

“The Government of the Federal Republic of Nigeria urges the international community to stand in solidarity with Cuba, Haiti, and Jamaica and provide all necessary assistance to help them rebuild stronger and more resilient communities,” the statement concluded.

Nigeria’s thoughts and prayers, the ministry affirmed, remain with the governments and peoples of the affected nations as they rebuild from this tragic disaster
