The newly sworn-in Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Joash Amupitan, has pledged to prioritize staff welfare and deliver credible elections that reflect the will of Nigerians.
Professor Amupitan made the pledge at the INEC headquarters in Abuja during his assumption of office and official handover from the Acting Chairman, Mrs. May Agbamuche-Mbu.
He urged INEC staff to embrace teamwork and commitment to duty in order to achieve the Commission’s objectives under his leadership.
“We must work together with a sense of purpose and dedication. I am committed to creating a conducive environment where every staff member can discharge their responsibilities effectively,” he said.
The new Chairman reaffirmed his commitment to upholding the integrity of Nigeria’s electoral process, emphasizing that credible elections remain the cornerstone of democracy.
“The integrity of our elections is not something we should ever negotiate. It is the very soul of democracy,” he stated.
Professor Amupitan identified the forthcoming Anambra State Governorship Election as a major test for the Commission’s readiness and a vital opportunity to demonstrate its commitment to transparency and fairness.
Earlier, while handing over the reins of leadership, Mrs. May Agbamuche-Mbu expressed confidence in Professor Amupitan’s ability to build on the solid institutional foundation established by the Commission. She congratulated him and assured him of the full cooperation and support of INEC management and staff.
The ceremony was attended by Professor Amupitan’s wife and children, senior officials from the University of Jos, and top management staff of INEC.
