The Federal Government has reaffirmed that English Language and Mathematics remain compulsory subjects for all students sitting for O’Level examinations across Nigeria.
In a statement released by the Federal Ministry of Education and signed by Boriowo Folasade, Director of Press and Public Relations, the Ministry clarified that the new streamlined admission guidelines do not remove the requirement to register and sit for these two core subjects.
According to the Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, CON, the ongoing reform is designed to promote fairness, inclusiveness, and flexibility in tertiary education admissions. The initiative ensures that capable students are not denied entry into higher institutions solely due to deficiencies in non-core subjects.
Dr. Alausa explained that the new system aims to modernize Nigeria’s education standards in line with global best practices. It gives universities and colleges the flexibility to admit students into certain programmes where a credit pass in English or Mathematics may not be mandatory — but all students must still write both subjects in their O’Level exams.
He emphasized that English and Mathematics remain essential for communication, critical thinking, and lifelong learning, adding that the adjustment only affects admission criteria, not the subject requirements themselves.
The Ministry further advised students, parents, and stakeholders to verify all information through official government channels to avoid misinformation regarding education policies
