The Director-General of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), Prof. Charles Anosike, has called for the integration of weather-related protocols into Nigeria’s national transport safety strategy, particularly within the country’s growing multimodal transport system.
Prof. Anosike made the call during the Multimodal Stakeholders Workshop hosted by the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) on Thursday in Abuja. He emphasized that all transport modes land, rail, maritime, and aviation are heavily influenced by weather dynamics, and therefore must account for meteorological data in safety planning and policy formulation.
“Weather plays a critical role in transportation safety. Understanding how it affects each mode of transport is essential for building a resilient and efficient national system,” Anosike stated.
He reiterated NiMet’s commitment to delivering timely, precise meteorological information to support national safety objectives, stressing that integrating weather considerations into transport planning is more vital than ever, especially as the NSIB’s oversight mandate expands.
Commending the NSIB for its proactive stakeholder engagement, Anosike noted that aligning local safety standards with global best practices would not only improve regulatory coherence but also enhance public safety across Nigeria’s transport network.
He expressed optimism that the workshop’s outcomes would lead to actionable, locally-relevant safety protocols that ensure better coordination and risk management across all modes of transport.
