In recognition of his courageous undercover investigation exposing a widespread certificate racketeering network in the Benin Republic, the House of Representatives has approved a 10-year security protection plan for investigative journalist Umar Audu of DAILY NIGERIAN.
Audu’s damning report uncovered how fraudulent degrees from degree mills in Cotonou were being acquired by Nigerians and subsequently validated by certain government agencies, including the Ministry of Education.
The exposé has triggered a major probe by a joint panel of the House Committees on University Education, Polytechnic Education, Interior, Foreign Affairs, and Youth Development.
Speaking during the committee’s session on Monday, Chairman Abubakar Fulata announced the House’s resolution directing the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies, including the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), to provide comprehensive protection for Audu for the next decade.
“We are grateful to Umar Audu for his bravery in exposing this dangerous malpractice. The House calls on the Minister of Interior to ensure that the Civil Defence Corps and the police offer the necessary protection,” Fulata stated.
The investigation continues as the House seeks to uncover the full extent of the certificate fraud and determine the involvement of public officials and institutions in legitimizing fake academic credentials.
