The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, has called on Regimental Sergeant Majors (RSMs) across the Nigerian Army to strengthen discipline, mentorship and professionalism as the Service pursues its expansion and modernisation programme.
Shaibu gave the directive on Friday, November 6, 2026, during the closing ceremony of the Second Regimental Sergeant Majors’ Convention 2026 in Benin City, Edo State.
According to the Acting Director of Army Public Relations, Colonel Appolonia Anele, the five-day convention, held from November 2 to 6, brought together RSMs from various Army formations and units, as well as representatives of sister Services and other security agencies.
The Army Chief described RSMs as key custodians of the Service’s professional standards, institutional values and fighting spirit, noting that they play important roles in mentoring soldiers and advising commanders.
He stressed that their responsibilities extend beyond maintaining appearance and order during parades to ensuring discipline, responsible conduct and commitment to duty, particularly during challenging military operations.
Shaibu also urged the senior non-commissioned officers to address behavioural issues capable of weakening military professionalism, including drug abuse, gambling, absenteeism and the misuse of social media.
He specifically commended a presentation delivered by the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, Brigadier General Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd), on tackling drug abuse within the military.

Earlier, during a visit to Headquarters 4 Brigade, the COAS praised troops for their efforts in maintaining peace and security within their area of responsibility.
He disclosed that some of the operational challenges presented by the Brigade Commander had already received attention.
The Army Chief charged personnel to remain committed to protecting lives and property, safeguarding national interests and confronting criminal elements threatening security.
However, he emphasised that military operations must be conducted professionally and within the limits of the law, with particular attention to the protection of civilians.
He further urged RSMs and other personnel to uphold discipline, professionalism and their constitutional responsibilities, describing strong regimentation and exemplary conduct as essential to building a more combat-ready and resilient Army.
Shaibu expressed appreciation to the General Officer Commanding 2 Division, resource persons and the Edo State Government and people for supporting the successful hosting of the convention.
He also acknowledged the continued support of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, for the Nigerian Army.
The convention comes as the Nigerian Army continues efforts to strengthen its manpower, professional standards and operational capacity amid the country’s security challenges.
