Nigeria’s new High Commissioner to South Africa, Ambassador Femi Fani-Kayode, has formally commenced his diplomatic duties following the presentation of copies of his Letters of Credence to South Africa’s Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO).

Fani-Kayode presented the documents on Friday, October 30, 2026, to Clayson Monyela, DIRCO’s Deputy Director-General for Public Diplomacy and Acting Chief of State Protocol.

According to a statement by Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the presentation marks an important step in the accreditation process, allowing the Nigerian envoy to begin his diplomatic responsibilities before formally presenting his original credentials to South African President Cyril Ramaphosa.

Following the presentation, Fani-Kayode held an initial diplomatic meeting with Ambassador Seboga, a Deputy Director-General at DIRCO, to discuss relations between Nigeria and South Africa.

During the meeting, the Nigerian High Commissioner expressed optimism that his appointment would create fresh opportunities for stronger bilateral cooperation, strategic partnerships and collaboration between both countries.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs explained that the presentation of copies of Letters of Credence is an established diplomatic procedure that allows an ambassador-designate to begin official functions before submitting the original documents to the host country’s president.

The ministry noted that Fani-Kayode’s formal presentation of credentials to President Ramaphosa is expected to take place in the coming days.

His assumption of diplomatic duties comes at a time when Nigeria and South Africa continue to engage on issues affecting their bilateral relationship, particularly concerns over the safety and welfare of Nigerians living in South Africa.

These concerns include reported xenophobic and Afrophobic hostilities, which have continued to feature in discussions surrounding relations between the two countries.

Fani-Kayode’s new assignment is expected to provide another opportunity for diplomatic engagement between Abuja and Pretoria, particularly in strengthening cooperation and addressing issues affecting citizens of both countries.

His initial engagements with South African officials mark the beginning of his diplomatic mission as Nigeria’s representative in the country.
