The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has honoured Captain Smit Machchhar and members of the flydubai crew with the First Class Order of Zayed II for their courage during a life-threatening incident aboard a passenger flight in September.
The prestigious national honour was conferred by UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan in recognition of the crew’s bravery and efforts to protect passengers during the incident involving flight FZ1073 on September 30, 2026.
The flight was travelling from Dubai to Tel Aviv when a violent confrontation occurred inside the cockpit, leaving the captain injured and forcing the aircraft to divert to Saudi Arabia.
According to reports, Machchhar was attacked by his co-pilot while the aircraft was airborne. Despite suffering serious injuries, he managed to unlock the cockpit door, allowing others on board to intervene and restrain the attacker.
The intervention helped bring the emergency under control, while other flydubai pilots on board assisted in ensuring the aircraft landed safely at Tabuk Airport in Saudi Arabia.
All passengers survived the incident, which triggered an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the cockpit attack.
The UAE leadership praised the captain and crew for their professionalism, courage and sense of responsibility in protecting the lives of those on board.
The First Class Order of Zayed II is among the UAE’s prestigious honours, recognising individuals for exceptional service and contributions.
The recognition highlights the critical role of airline personnel in responding to emergencies and safeguarding passengers, even under extreme pressure.
The incident has also drawn international attention to aviation security and the importance of effective emergency response procedures.
