Nigeria has called for an increase in scholarship opportunities for its students under Hungary’s Stipendium Hungaricum Scholarship Programme, with Ambassador Abass Braimah arguing that the current allocation of 50 slots is insufficient for the country’s large population.
Braimah made the appeal on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, during a working visit to the headquarters of Tempus Public Foundation in Budapest, Hungary.
He was accompanied by the Deputy Head of Mission and Minister Plenipotentiary, Mrs Vivienne Ekwora Ogonyi.
The Nigerian delegation was received by the Foundation’s Director-General, Péter Tordai, and the Director of Study in Hungary, Orsolya Jánosik.
The meeting focused on strengthening educational cooperation between Nigeria and Hungary, particularly through the Stipendium Hungaricum Scholarship Programme, which provides international students with opportunities to study at Hungarian universities.
50 SCHOLARSHIP SLOTS NOT ENOUGH, AMBASSADOR SAYS
During the meeting, Braimah urged Tempus Public Foundation to increase the number of scholarships allocated to Nigerian students.

He noted that the existing allocation of 50 slots was limited considering Nigeria’s population and the number of young people seeking opportunities for higher education.
The ambassador appealed to the Foundation to consider expanding the allocation so that more qualified Nigerians could benefit from the programme.
An increase in the available slots could create additional opportunities for Nigerian students seeking international education and academic exposure.
APPLICATIONS EXPECTED IN NOVEMBER
Braimah also encouraged eligible Nigerians to take advantage of the scholarship programme when the application window opens in November 2026.
Prospective applicants are advised to monitor official announcements from the scholarship programme and relevant Nigerian government authorities for application requirements, deadlines and eligibility criteria.
The Stipendium Hungaricum Scholarship Programme is part of Hungary’s efforts to support international education and strengthen academic relationships with partner countries.
NIGERIA AND HUNGARY SEEK STRONGER EDUCATIONAL TIES
The ambassador’s visit forms part of the Nigerian Embassy’s broader efforts to deepen bilateral relations between Nigeria and Hungary.
The discussions also highlighted the importance of educational partnerships in creating opportunities for Nigerian students and strengthening cooperation between the two countries.
Nigeria’s request for additional scholarship slots comes as more young people seek access to quality higher education and international academic opportunities.
Whether the allocation will increase will depend on the outcome of further engagement with the Hungarian authorities and the relevant scholarship administrators.
