Human rights lawyer and activist Deji Adeyanju has commended the Edo State Governor for what he described as firm action against kidnapping and other violent crimes in the state.
Adeyanju, however, maintained his criticism of the governor’s approach to governance, saying his commendation of the administration’s security efforts should not be interpreted as a change in his broader position on its performance.
In a statement, Adeyanju praised measures including the identification and prosecution of suspected kidnappers, as well as the demolition of properties and hideouts allegedly linked to criminal activities.
According to him, such measures send a strong message that kidnapping and other violent crimes will not be tolerated in Edo State.
Adeyanju urged the governor to intensify the ongoing efforts and strengthen preventive measures across the state.
He particularly called for greater use of community policing, arguing that security structures should be strengthened at the ward and local government levels.
He said stronger community-based security structures could help residents provide timely intelligence to security agencies and support efforts to prevent kidnappings before they occur.
While commending the administration’s anti-kidnapping measures, Adeyanju reiterated his opposition to what he described as the governor’s “failed governance style.”
He urged the state government to sustain its security interventions while improving preventive strategies and community participation in the fight against criminality.
