Joint troops conducting an offensive operation in Ezeagu Local Government Area of Enugu State have foiled an ambush and attacks involving improvised explosive devices (IEDs) reportedly linked to suspected IPOB/ESN fighters.
The operation was carried out at about 4:00 a.m. on September 28, 2026, around Imezi-Owa, Abunozu communities and the Afor-Ugwu/Ajali forest areas of the local government area.
The troops comprised personnel from 82 Division Garrison, 103 Battalion (Rear), 197 Special Forces Battalion, 15 Brigade and the Nigerian Navy Special Boat Service.
According to security sources cited by security and defence analyst Zagazola Makama, the troops worked alongside operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS), local informants and the Air Component of Operation UDO KA.
The forces reportedly engaged suspected IPOB/ESN fighters near Ugbene Bridge during the operation, forcing the fighters to retreat from the area.
During a subsequent search of the operational area, the troops reportedly encountered command-detonated IEDs and attempted ambushes.
The attacks were reportedly foiled, while the troops continued operations across the area.
Security forces are maintaining their presence in the affected locations as efforts continue to prevent the suspected fighters from regrouping and to clear forest corridors within the area.
