ABUJA — The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has launched a digital platform designed to improve monitoring of electricity load and outages across the transmission network, with the aim of strengthening grid reliability, accountability and operational efficiency.
The Load & Outage Analytics platform, developed in-house by TCN’s Operations Department, was unveiled at the company’s headquarters in Abuja.
The platform is expected to replace fragmented and largely manual outage-reporting processes with a centralised digital system capable of analysing transmission network performance more quickly and consistently.
Speaking at the launch, TCN’s Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Engr. Sule Ahmed Abdulaziz, represented by the General Manager, Project Coordination, Engr. Aminu Tahir, congratulated the Operations Department for developing the platform internally.
Abdulaziz said the technology had already improved visibility of transmission operations, although it was not yet fully deployed across the network.

He identified technical and economic losses as continuing challenges for TCN, stressing the need for improved load management and supply-and-demand analysis to enhance grid stability.
According to him, better control and maintenance of the transmission network would help reduce outages, improve efficiency and minimise the financial impact of prolonged electricity interruptions.
The General Manager, Operations, Engr. Godwin Afamefuna Aguiyi, who led the technical presentation, said the platform was developed to address longstanding weaknesses in TCN’s reliability-reporting system.
He explained that outage data had previously been stored separately in spreadsheets across different regions, making national-level analysis slow and inconsistent.
“The manual compilation was slow and the performance indicators were calculated inconsistently, which made it difficult to get national assessments in a timely and accurate manner,” Aguiyi said.
The new Streamlit-based application has 13 modules covering regions, transmission stations, transformers and feeders. It can automatically classify outages and generate reliability-performance data and management reports within minutes.
The system also incorporates role-based access, structured data uploads and audit trails. According to TCN, individual staff identification will replace shared logins and unmanaged spreadsheet access, making it easier to trace operations and improve accountability.
Using July 2026 outage statistics, Aguiyi demonstrated the platform’s analytical capabilities. He said the figures were raw submissions from TCN’s regional teams and would be cross-checked against the official release of the Nigerian Independent System Operator.
The data showed 3,714 outages nationwide in July 2026, resulting in a reported 48,603 MWh of lost load.
In the Lagos area alone, the data recorded 20,693 MWh of lost load, comprising 572 emergency outages, 306 forced outages and 129 scheduled outages.
The presentation further showed that 22 feeders exceeded the permissible outage hours, with corresponding losses estimated at ₦720.33 million.
One example cited was the Obosi feeder in Onitsha, which recorded a lost load of 1,063.74 MWh at Band A rates.
Aguiyi clarified that the feeder-level figures covered portions of the network under TCN’s responsibility and excluded outages attributable to Distribution Companies (DisCos).
The platform also features a Fault Attribution Ratio, designed to help determine responsibility for service interruptions between TCN and DisCos.
Under the applicable Service Level Agreement, the permitted downtime liability is allocated at 30 per cent to TCN and 70 per cent to DisCos, with individual outages assessed according to their specific causes and affected network segments.
Aguiyi said the platform could also support the monitoring of transmission losses if the necessary energy-measurement instruments were deployed across the network.
He recommended nationwide deployment of the system, integration of Internet of Things (IoT) technologies for real-time data collection, and improved connectivity and display systems at transmission stations.
The Executive Director, Human Resources and Corporate Services, Mrs Abiodun Afolabi-Fadahunsi, said engineers and system operators required the appropriate tools and instruments to sustain grid stability.
She assured the technical professionals of management’s continued support, adding that TCN was monitoring daily grid reports and addressing operational requirements as they emerged.
The launch marks another step in TCN’s efforts to digitise its monitoring and reporting processes, with the developers expecting the platform to enable faster identification of network problems, improve outage accountability and strengthen overall transmission-grid performance.
