ABUJA – Nigeria has recorded a major trade milestone after its shipment of 252 metric tonnes of palm kernel shell activated carbon became the first import into China’s Hainan Free Trade Port to benefit from the country’s new zero-tariff policy for eligible African nations.
According to Chinese customs authorities, the shipment marks the first cargo cleared under the policy, which took effect on May 1, 2026.
The zero-tariff initiative applies to imports from 20 African countries that maintain diplomatic relations with China but are not classified as least developed countries.
The policy is part of China’s broader strategy to deepen economic cooperation, strengthen trade ties and expand market access for African exports.
Nigeria’s successful shipment highlights the growing trade relationship between both countries and demonstrates the opportunities available for Nigerian exporters seeking greater access to the Chinese market.
Analysts say the initiative could encourage increased exports of agricultural products, minerals and value-added goods from Nigeria while boosting bilateral trade between Africa’s largest economy and China.
The development is also expected to create new opportunities for Nigerian businesses by reducing trade costs and improving the competitiveness of locally produced goods in one of the world’s largest consumer markets.
