ABUJA – The Federal Government has congratulated the President of Senegal, Bassirou Diomaye Faye, on his election as the new Chairman of the Authority of Heads of State and Government of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
In a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Nigeria described President Faye’s election as a significant milestone for the regional bloc and reaffirmed its commitment to working closely with his administration to advance peace, security, regional integration and economic development across West Africa.
The ministry commended ECOWAS for ensuring a smooth leadership transition, saying the process reflects the organisation’s continued commitment to democratic values, regional unity and collective progress.
According to the statement, President Faye assumes office at a critical time when West Africa is confronting security concerns, governance challenges and the need for stronger economic cooperation among member states.
As one of the founding members of ECOWAS, Nigeria reiterated its support for the new chairman and expressed confidence in his ability to strengthen regional cooperation, promote stability and drive sustainable development within the sub-region.
The Federal Government also pledged to continue collaborating with Senegal and other ECOWAS member states to reinforce the community’s institutions, boost intra-regional trade, encourage good governance and enhance peace and security.
Nigeria further congratulated Senegal on the appointment of General Birame Diop as the new President of the ECOWAS Commission, expressing optimism about working with the new leadership to advance the objectives of the regional bloc.
